Join FOLG for Picnic Ground Mushroom Foray, Sunday, June 22nd, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Weaverville-area mycologist and commercial mushroom grower Pete Whelihan will address the hunters on fungi ID, collection, and classification, before turning the group loose in the Blue Ridge Parkway's Linville Falls Picnic Grounds. We're in the mainparking lot visible from the BRP and across the parkway from the spur road out to the Falls.

Easter Blooms of Gorge Walk, April 20, 2:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Join FOLG for a spring blossoms walk of the Marion Wright Trail. We will assemble at the Pine Gap Parking lot on April 20, 2:00 to 5:30 p.m.

The sight of a cluster of trilliums ( t. grandiforum) alone makes this spring Gorge walk a must. Early birds will be looking for round-leaved violets (violas), windflowers (Thalictrum thalictroides), not to mention star-chickweed (Stellaria pubera) and the brave little bluets or "Quaker Ladies" which tremble in the chilly April gusts (Houstonia caerulea). FOLG announces an Adopt-a-Trail volunteer walk-through of the Devil's Hole Trail in the NE quadrant on March 17th, or St. Patrick's Day. Join us at the Sitting Bear trail head on FR 210 (or Tablerock road) at 2:00 pm for our seasonal trail maintenance with on the job training in surface upkeep, vegetation clearing, litter patrol, and a visit to the banks of the Linville. Join FOLG mycologist and "fun-guy" Pete Whelihan for the summer's second mushroom foray, Sunday August 18th at 2:00 at the Pine Gap Trail parking lot. Pete will identify and classify the finds and edible species will be pan fried and served on crackers.

Allen Hyde's Linville Gorge Hikers Guide Now in Its 5th Printing

While most of famed Linville Gorge author Allen Hyde's current energy is directed towards a hefty, comprehensive Gorge book due out sometime next year (we hope!), he has recently released a 5th printing of his popular Linville Gorge Hikers Guide.

Phil Phelan's new book, The Hiker's Guide to the Linville Gorge Hiking Circuit, is now officially on sale. FOLG's own Christopher Blake wrote the forward:

“Information about the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area increased at a boom-rate in the last two decades of the 20th century. The Internet made possible a global connection among the Gorge community with text and graphic updates posted around the clock and a flood of GPS data cascading somewhat like the cataract of the great Falls. Online forums and message boards quickly tuned into a sort of digital-psychic community of the Gorge, daily in the making.

Free Mushroom Foray, June 16 at Linville Falls Picnic Ground

Friends of Linville Gorge (FOLG) invites the public to join Pete Whelihan for a free mushroom search, or foray, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Linville Falls Picnic Ground by the Blue Ridge Parkway. Whelihan, a mycologist and commercial mushroom grower, will lead the group in identifying and classifying specimens around the Park Service picnic ground beside the Linville River. The group will assemble at the large parking lot just outside the picnic ground gates and adjacent to the Parkway, across from the spur road to the Linville Falls campground and visitor center (milepost 316.5), rain or shine.
